My Town
Hey everyone!
For our latest assignment in our Current Issues in Teaching course, we had the chance to explore the flipped learning in a super creative way! In case you're not familiar, the flipped learning means students learn new topics at home (like through videos), and then practice what they've learned in class. It's a fun, flexible method that helps students learn at their own pace. Of course, it has its challenges too like needing access to technology or keeping everyone motivated to watch the videos but overall, it creates more time for cool activities during class!
Our team Yusuf Eren Tunç, Mehmet Emin Tümen, and I, Bilal Yaktıyol chose to teach vocabulary from the MEB Grade 5 English Coursebook. The words we focused on in our video are:
Bakery
Barber's Shop
Book Shop
Bus Stop
Fire Station
Pharmacy
Post Office
Shoe Shop
Stationery
Our concept was buildings in the town, and we wanted to make learning these words as fun and engaging as possible. We wanted to be sure that each word was clearly introduced with visuals so that 5th-grade students could learn them easily. Additionally, we designed two simple follow-up activities to check their understanding.
Working together as a group was great but we had a few challenges along the way. For example, syncing the animations to match our narration took some extra time, and finding the perfect visuals was harder than we thought. To overcome these, we split up the tasks: Yusuf Eren and Mehmet Emin worked on the animations in Animaker and I did the final editing in CapCut to make sure everything looked and sounded great. Teamwork really made the dream work!
We had so much fun working on this project, and we hope our video makes learning vocabulary enjoyable for 5th graders. If you're curious, check out our video below and give it a try with the activities we designed! We’d love to hear your feedback.
