Creating a Corpus-Based Teaching Material
Hi
everyone, I recently worked on an exciting assignment for our "Current
Issues in Teaching" course. The task? To
create a corpus-based teaching material.
My group, consisting of two classmates and me, focused on the unit
"sports" and designed a worksheet to teach the difference between for and
since. Here's how it all came together. We used COCA
(Corpus of Contemporary American English) as our primary resource, diving into
authentic examples to illustrate how for and since are used in different contexts.
We wanted our material to be both engaging and
educational. First, We designed a worksheet that was visually appealing and selected sample sentences from COCA that
included for and since in sports-related contexts. For example:
The
team has been practicing for three hours.
He has
been a fan of this football club since 2018.
Our worksheet guided students through analyzing these
examples, helping them to understand the rules and patterns themselves. We then designed exercises for practice, like multiple-choice
questions, fill-in-the-blanks, and error correction exercises. We also added a
"How to Use a Corpus" section, guiding students on navigating COCA
and creating their sentences using corpus data. To deepen understanding, we
encouraged students to observe alternative meanings of "for" and
"since" ("since" as a reason). This helped
learners see grammar as flexible and context-dependent.
Creating this material was a learning experience because
we gained insight into incorporating corpus data into teaching. This assignment
will also help us in our future classrooms when we graduate.
